Gilbert and Michael Lau
For all those people who can never get it together to book days ahead at Flower Drum - there is now Son of Flower Drum - Lau’s Family Kitchen which had an exclusive, `soft’ opening for closest friends and relations on the weekend. This venue is even more accessible to the cool crowd since it is part of the Prince of Wales complex in Acland Street - and quite intimate with only 50 seats.
Just like the setting, the menu is rocked up a bit with calamari and fresh whiting along with all your Flower Drum’ favourites. Gilbert Lau’s son, Michael is running the place but Gilbert - the legendary A-list restauranteur will be making special guest appearances. Best of all, it will be open seven days a week from the official start of the business on Tuesday with no bookings.
Our intrepid, interstate correspondent John Curtin not only rated it highly but especially recommends the Pineapple Fried Rice. Guess that must be a Melbourne thing - in Sydney we gave up rice served in a pineapple at the same time as we kissed goodbye to the maraschino cherry.

EeeK! The Pineapple Rice.
PS) John, could you stop hanging out in restaurants and file that investigative report for the site you promised on the new wardrobe choices for top, white collar criminals. It’s way overdue - thanks Ros x
